It is defined more by the weight of construction and formality than by one fixed silhouette.

Wedding wear is generally built heavier and more structured, using richer fabrics and denser embroidery to hold shape through a long day of events. Festive wear covers a broader range of celebrations and can be lighter and less formal. The two overlap, but wedding pieces are typically the highest-formality end of festive dressing.

Heavier silks, velvets, and brocades are common for wedding-occasion pieces, chosen for how they hold structure and catch light under indoor and evening settings. Lighter cottons and georgettes are more typical for daytime pre-wedding events like mehendi, where movement and heat matter more than formality.

Heavier silks, velvets, and embellished pieces should generally be dry-cleaned rather than washed at home, since embroidery and delicate weaves can be damaged by water and agitation. Store folded in breathable cotton rather than plastic, and keep embellished pieces away from direct sunlight and humidity between wears. Lighter cottons and georgettes worn for daytime events can often be hand- or machine-washed; check the garment's specific wash-care label before washing at home.
