The Handloom Edit
Handloom is cloth woven on a hand-operated loom, not a power loom, worked by a weaver who sets rhythm and tension by hand rather than by motor. Phulia, in West Bengal's Nadia district, is one of India's oldest handloom centers, known for jamdani and tant weaving where extra motifs are worked into the weave itself rather than printed or embroidered after. A handloom weaver works at a fraction of a power loom's output, which is why handloom cloth carries slight width variation and texture a power loom cannot replicate. The slowness is not a flaw; it is the process.
